Airbus A380: 5-star hotel on wings

Continuing the luxury-review posts series — Burj Al Arab: the most luxurious hotel in the world.

Crew

The Airbus A380 is a true wonder of modern engineering. It is the largest airliner ever made, with a carrying capability of up to 853 passengers. Being 50% wider than the Boeing 747, it's closest competitor, the Airbus has truly surpassed all previous achievements of plane construction and interior design.

A380's level of comfort (well, at least for business-class passengers) is remarkable. The entire upper-deck is dedicated for premium passengers. All seats can be transformed into full-sized beds (190 cm in length) with a pillow and a mattress. Each passenger has his own mini-bar and a full-sized, bartender-serviced bar is available at the rear of the plane. And on top of all, there are two shower cabins available during flight.

Sergey Dolya, one of Russia's top bloggers, flew with Emirates last week to tell us the story of how flights could look like in the future.

Business and economy class passengers access the plane through different jet bridges and stay on separate floors during the entire flight.

boarding

Each row has only 4 seats:

Business class

Business class cabin

Seat

Passengers are given chair stickers so that the air steward would know what to do in case you fall asleep.

wake up

The seat can be transformed into a nearly-horizontal 190-cm long bed.

Bed

In front of each passenger there is a 17-inch touch screen, electric plug, 2 USB ports (for USB-charging or viewing photos) and a remote-control combined with a satellite phone.

Each seat has it's own wireless control device regulating the backrest angle, lighting level and massage-modes of the chair.

Remote control & TV

Several external video-cameras are available for viewing.

Rear camera

The back section of the plane accommodates a bar with free drinks and snacks.

Bartender

Two couches with safety belts are installed along the walls.

Bar seats

Five toilets are located on the second floor and ten are on the first.

Toilet

Besides the toilets, there are two shower-rooms for first-class passengers. Albeit you must book them one hour in advanced before usage and water is available for only 5 minutes.

Bathroom

Shower

First-class passengers have their own bar with better drinks but no bartender for some reason.

Bar

A grand staircase is located near the showers. It leads to the first floor where the economy class passengers and the pilots are seated.

Stairs downstairs

On the first floor there are 396 passenger seats.

Economy Class

In the center of the cabin two rooms are dedicated for the crew to rest. Up to 9 persons can sleep here simultaneously.

Crew Beds

Some additional facts about the airplane:

14 first-class seats, 76 business-class seats and 396 economy-class seats are located on board. A 7-hour flight is serviced by 27 crew members:

2 pilots
4 head stewards
4 first-class stewards
8 business-class stewards
8 economy-class stewards
1 bathhouse attendant, responsible for the showers

2 additional pilots and 1 extra bathhouse attendant are additionally employed for 14-hour long flights, making it a total of 30 crew members.

Wing span - 80 meters. Fuel stock - 240 tons. The minimum distance for an aircraft trailing an A380 is 11 km. Even Boeing 747 risks being overthrown in air if coming closer to this massive giant.

Engine noise can surprisingly be heard very faintly. The only thing interrupting the silence is the ventilation system on the ceiling.

And for those wondering about the price: return business-class ticket costs $2500, first-class costs $4000 (Dubai-Bangkok destination).

Economy class totally sucks. I'd rather fly on something smaller than stay seated with 350 folks in one huge room for 7 hours.

Anonymous said...

Cry harder "Anonymous", war is the big money waster these days. I'll take comfortable transport over killing people any day of the week.

Anonymous said...

Man that sucks if this thing is landing all other planes would have to stay 11km away. What a nightmare for ATC

Anonymous said...

WAH.. what a waste of money? Bullshit. If you can actually read this article you will find it seats 853 people! When you think about it, it uses LESS gas and saves time and money, because instead of using multiple smaller planes, more gates runway time, etc. This gets 853 people up in the air all at once.

Anonymous said...

I saw one of these last summer and no thanks, I'll fly my own airplane. I don't need 515,or 852, of my closest friends around to get to where I'm going. It's the answer to a question that should never have been ask. Now, if I can only stay out of the vortex, 11km away. But, then its not a waste.

The REAL Randini said...

and I would still no doubt have a problem getting me another voddy martini!

Joshua said...

The maximum capacity of the A380 is indeed 853 people, but only if the plane is converted to full economy class. If you actually read the article, this version only holds 470, or just a little more than half. Don't be fooled into thinking it is as environmentally friendly as it sounds.

I just leave dumb comments without reading the comments of others. If you're still reading this, you may want to do the same. But you won't. you're hoping I say something clever, something of worth. But I'm not. I'm just gonna ramble on with these stupid worthless words that in less than a day won't mean a thing, let alone in five years. This has been a complete waste of my time and yours. I hope your happy. But I'm sure you're not. This has been written with neither wit nor humor. It's just one big long crappy blah session. Of the 2% of you still reading this I have a joke. Three guys are walking down a street. The first two walk into a bar. The third one ducks. Super. Of the 2% I've somehow managed to captivate, like 1% of that total number even got a chuckle there. Oh....My dates here. Later.

dude, no one cares about about being environmentally friendly if it means they have to sacrifice that comfort level. especially not on a 14 hour flight

I'd much rather stay at home. It's also more comfortable.
The plane is probably full of drunks.
Fuck, this plane's got way too much useless shit. I'd much rather pay half the price and have half the comfort. The chair/beds are nice though.

And all you gold polished ass motherfuckers saying things like "Once you get a load of this plane, everything else leaves your ass unsatisfied", I wish I wasn't an atheist, so I would believe you would burn in hell.

Where the fuck do you get the money?

Anne-Marie said...

Golly. Don't some people get upset easily!!!!!
I saw this plane last year at Farnborough Airshow. it was very impressive and QUIET! My son and D-I-L went to Singapore onit earlier in the year and said it was great. As for economy etc... When we all want jet off around the world, I guess we will have to accept bigger planes. As for enonomy - that's fine by me. I refuse to pay (a lot) extra just for a fancy seat. As long as I get fed and watered regularly on a long haul flight, I'm quite happy.

Anonymous said...

Must be a rough 7 hour flight to require a shower and change of under pants/underwear. No dispenser or vibrator.

Anonymous said...

And we wonder why they can not pay back the 6 billion dollar loan

Anonymous said...

I think something else that has been missed here in some of the mindless stupidity, for example: "Anonymous said...I wouldn't fly on anything from a sandnigger, I hate sandniggers!",
is that Airbus is a European company and they manufacture the plane and sell them to Airlines. Second, the fact that this plane causes air turbulence behind it for 11kms is impressive, but when landing other planes can approach at other altitudes and descent patterns in order to avoid this. Aircraft controllers take into account many things to bring a plane down safely which makes it the most stressful job around.

Anonymous said...

All I keep thinking when looking at this ugly waste of money is titanic, and I hope its carrying the rich list when it goes down.

Anonymous said...

Agreed with first anonymous, it's a waste of money.

Are (some) people this pampered that they need all this shit, to keep themselves entertained? I mean what's so bad about riding coach, meeting a strange person...and if they're interesting, having a meaningless conversation and if they're undesirable...listen to an MP3 player.

It's like MTV cribs...some shit other people can have...that's completely pointless to the point of "WHY!!?"

I used to have a problem with self-confidence, thinking I wasn't quite as smart as I should be. But that's only because I'm so smart, I realize what I don't know. After reading internet comments, I've realized that I'm quite smart and articulate compared to most other people.

Chris said...

the bad thing is that you don't have seatbelts in the shower :)) or on the toilet seat. imagine a turbulence when you want to take a dump.

Leah said...

I got a chuckle from Anonymous's long rambling joke.

Anyway, this would be some shit by the Dubai Group. Dubai is a fucking crazy waste of money. But it's got so much cool shit.

Anonymous said...

If 2 of these collide that's one hell of a death toll.

Mermaldad said...

When the Boeing 747 came out, they had an upper deck all set up with luxury everything. There was a grand staircase between the decks. Now they've pretty much given up on that in favor of "how many seats can we pack into this thing?" I suspect the A380 will have a similar story.

kLlC said...

Mermaldad, I agree

Economy passengers > business passengers.

90 first-class and business passengers * $3000 (on average) = $270.000

Instead of them, you could place 400 more people paying $1000 on average: $400.000.

But the thing is, airlines seldom have their planes fully packed. So it's better to sell of some the seats with a premium, than not to sell them at all.

Anonymous said...

Not gonna lie, it would be fun to fly upscale on this sucker, but . . .how utterly wasteful and uncomfortably decadent. This is the kind of thing that makes me not entirely cool with being human. :)

Anonymous said...

All I have to say is, this may be why they're defaulting on $59 Billion in debt.

Dave said...

first class/business class needs to be eliminated entirely from all airlines.

huge waste.

Kay said...

I just want to know WHY anyone would need to take a 5 minute shower on a flight. Also, what would happen if the plan encountered all sorts of turbulence... while someone was in the shower.

All in all, HUGE waste of money. Yes, it would be nice to live in the lap of luxury during a 14 hour flight... but it's a brief 14 hours compared to the rest of your life where you might need the $4,000 you dropped on a plane ticket for something a little more productive.

However, it would be cool to fly on it... just once... for free :D

Anonymous said...

Um 11km? There is NO way that this plane could disrupt air that much or that long that another jet would have to trail it for 11km to prevent jet wash, etc.. Makes me wonder about the rest of this blog, that is, what I could count on as truth.
That's about 7 miles.

Anonymous said...

Have you ever flown anything? There is always a vortex behind a plane created by the pressure difference between the top of the wing and the bottom. Its just like an ocean liner that creates a wake. Its the displacement of something, and if that something is big enough, it will take a while for the medium to return to equilibrium.

Shane B. said...

WOW, WELL IT WOULD BE NICE JUST TO PLAY AROUND WITH ALL THE NICE EXPENSIVE STUFF LOL, BUT, WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!!! IF YOU NEED TO SHOW YOUR "STATUS" BY WASTING 4 GRAND ON AN AIRLINE TICKET, THEN MAYBE YOU NEED A SLAP IN THE MOUTH. THIS IS JUST RIDICULOUS... I JUST WANNA STEP ON, CHECK IT OUT, AND GET OFF B4 IT LEAVES THE GROUND!

- Haven't flown
- Can't spell
- Can't think for themself
- Can't open their mouth without swearing
- Hate everyone who is different
- Slow down to rubberneck car crashes
- Shouldn't be near a loaded computer

For everyone else, take a chill pill OR take a pat on the back that you're a positive person.

And by the way, relax on the ticket price. The huge majority of people who fly first or business class have had their ticket paid by a company or someone else. If you suffer from envy, go out and try to be a someone and perhaps, one day, somebody might feel inclined to buy you a ticket.

Sharing a shower on a plane? I don't think so. And 5 minutes of water? What a waste, you're better off washing in the sink.

Aaron said...

This plane is NOT a waste of money. Whats the big deal about having a mini bar and nice seats?? That stuff is relatively cheap. It's the engines, cockpit, etc that costs the tens of millions - in all planes. And who cares, its not YOUR money. All long range planes should be more like this. Have you ever stayed in a hotel?? They all have TV's, and beds, and appliances. Why don't you just sleep in your car instead? Is that too uncomfortable for you? Well that's how most airplanes are. uncomfortable.

This plane is wayyy more efficient than most of the everyday planes you fly in. Older planes consume much more gas because of inefficient engine designs. This plane is much "greener" for you tree loving hippies. So shut the f*** up you jealous bastards. It's their money, they are free to spend it how they please. $2500 isn't THAT much for an international flight...

Anonymous from 6:53, not every person in Dubai is Muslim. Yes, the Shari'ah Law is implemented into the government, but the Shari'ah Law is actually very practical in most cases and emphasizes respect. I'm a devout Christian and even I think everyone could learn from the Shari'ah Law. And, in case you were wondering, Muslim and Arab are not interchangeable words. Indonesia has the highest percentage of Muslims. Before you go on a rant about "those Muslims", how about you learn a little more about them. I am not gonna pay for the plane flight at all, nor am I gonna work for someone who pays for the ticket to get on. Don't care one way or another. This world is so big, and has so many actors in it, get real people. You can spend your labor dollars and energy anyway you want and its not money that is costing, its the people who put their labor energy into it to be designed and built. It doesn't really hurt the economy when everyone has a car and their own house in the United states. Come on, you are just bitchin because you cant get on the ridiculous thing. It is a piece of crap to enjoy while on this earth should you choose to enjoy it. With all the worthless shit on this earth, you pick on this little thing. hehehehee funny, stop working so hard for things you hate and you may enjoy some things you don't understand. I probably would check it out cause people are so darned disgusted at its creation, it might actually be fun. Amusement parks are worthless, hollywood is worthless, and so is the stock exchange, but no one is complaining about that. I'll ride that shit before I pick up a tabloid or work for a corporation or pay for a freaking concert ticket, or even go to an American College for that matter, yep I said it... and I am American heheheheh...I say kudos to having an idea and being able to spend your time and energy(and others) on something you love....KUDOS...you might try not complaining about someone elses dream, try NOT complaining about the use of the earth and TRY being creative yourself, then you wont have time to criticize someone or people for not thinking about you when they designed something, it's YOUR JOB TO CARE ABOUT U. It's totally okay for them to do this and if Dubai wants to run themselves in the ground with technology, let them LEARN THEIR way please and find something positive for you to do, I did, I got bored and read these comments and laughed till I was blue in the face then I got an idea now I am gonna get off of here and be creative, thanks for the laugh!..ANNDDDD Nice freaking plane and design...have more fun while u still can....everything isnt about the economy..stop watching the news so much and open your eyes to life!

Great plane, great photos, stupid article.

So many items are wrong, beginning with the first paragraph which states that the A380 is "50% wider than the Boeing 747".

Not true. External widths:
A380: 7.14 m (23.4 ft)
B747: 6.5 m (21 feet 4 in)

Internally:
A380 6.58 m
B747 6.1 m

For those of you who think $2500 return is a high fare - it cost my family more than that per person to fly cattle class (economy) return to the UK in the 80's, and not much less to fly return cattle class to LA THIS YEAR. If we'd been able to fly on the A380, we would have. And just remember, it is tourists like us who visit your cities and towns and pay our hard-earned cash to your stores, and your restaurants, and hotels, and malls and inject MILLIONS of dollars into your economies, and pay your wages etc. Without tourists, your economies would suffer badly.

Get off your environmental high horse and look at the bigger picture...

People, expensive things pays the workers as well as the government. Stop complaining about it being a waste of money when it's a method of earning money for companies and governments.

Also, spaceships should have showers; therefore, this plane is the step in the right direction...

A bunch of you are complaining that it is not needful and so forth....well, think to yourself,"What do I do for a living?" And then,"How does this impact my industry?"

Quite frankly, those with money supply jobs in thousands of ways. If you hate people with money, then you hate earning a living. I don't earn a whole lot, but I am happy. If I had more money, I would use it to start a business and pass on those blessings. You might say that rich people are snobby. I have met 'poor' people that are snobby too. Money and prosperity aren't the problem. It is like any other tool. These airbuses are supply thousands upon thousands with jobs. Those that manufacture EACH PART of the plane as well as those work ON the plane and those that produce the FOOD SERVED on the plane. Just think about what you are saying before you say it. There is some guy in Taiwan that is thankful for that plane because his job is more secure making LCD screens or microchips. There is some fellow in Kansas that produced the corn that fed the cow that was butchered by some fellow and is now on the menu aboard this marvel of engineering and ingenuity.

I’d love to fly in this plane. What an experience! Living in Australia, it’s a long way from anywhere to travel and this baby would make such a long trip all the more pleasant and comfortable. I hope Australian airlines catch on soon and purchase some of these. It’s called progress. I find it amusing that so many people are against it. As for the racial comments, it’s totally unnecessary and immature but I feel the need to join in on the action (which makes me just as immature). America has more debt than the UAE . USA debt is 2.72 trillion dollars to date. You have the highest rate of uneducated people in the free western world. You have the highest obesity rate. So I’d be inclined to say that makes you a bunch of fat, stupid poor hicks who really have no understanding of what progress is all about. Muslims aren’t the problem in the world, Americans are.

I think you will find that Qantas have quite a few of these babies!

Boo Hoo Hoo...

1. Waste of money - it's not YOUR money!

2. Polluting the air and planet - shut the fuck up with all your fake 'green' bullshit!

3. Sandniggers? - there are good and bad people in EVERY society. It is so amazing to me how people blame a whole group for the misdeeds of a few.

4. Etc., etc., etc.

As I read these comments, I can't help but see so much envy, pettiness, and just plain insecurity in most of the responses.

It is quite telling that most of them are from 'anonymous'! That makes me laugh, yet, it also makes me sad knowing these poor people can't see the positive side of this technological marvel.

I have a feeling they can't see the positive side of much in this wonderful experience we call life.

I've said enough. Love it, hate it, don't give a damn about it. Be well.

I have to admit, this plane looks awesome and i possibly enjoy the ride. They did a great job designing it, but i have to agree to the fact that they wasted so much money. The money could have gone to other useful needs. And i find it hilarious to compare it to Titanic, wasting so much money on one lousy plane, and within minutes that plane can be vanished. Just a thought, >__<

LISTEN UP!! OK seriously people, to those self righteous, ignorant and immature people who think that this is not a waste of money...you're so wrong and I'll tell you why. And to all those people who said it was a waste of money, none of you brought the fact of why its a waste of money. I challenge all of you to not take a pleasure trip for once to places like Dubai, but rather go to a country where people have less than you, which there are a lot to choose from. For example, go to Malawi where we needed armed guards 24/7, where people are so poor that they rarely eat, where people can't even take care of a simple tooth ache which we don't think twice about while it could kill those people (don't laugh, I'm in dental school and dental pathologies can easily escalate to life threatening situations if not taken care of), where AIDS is so rampant that over a %50 of people have it and most don't even know how you get it cause no one has ever taken the time to tell them, where fathers not only have to worry daily how they will feed their family, but also are in constant fear because of the rampant crime. Take one mission trip and you'll see how we are such irresponsible SOBs with our money, time and energy, always trying to find ways to make our own lives better and satisfy our WANTS instead of trying to meet the NEEDS of others. Don't get defensive reading this cause you know its true, just put yourself in their shoes and then see how you feel about it.

Just a side note...if you have a valid point to make, as soon as you use bad grammar, it completely nullifies your comment. How do you expect people to take you seriously when if you can't even spell correctly etc.

Luke said...

See how annoying that is when your comments don't make sense (see the end of the above side note for example)

Ozredman said...

Okay Luke on 26/2, always be very careful when you tell people to watch their grammar. As soon as you wrote %50 I realized you probably wrote in a hurry. I haven't proof read the whole article for mistakes but pedantically, I suspect there might be one or two others.

Anyway, it's wonderful that you have a conscience and are prepared to put your heart on your sleeve. However, I have traveled to many poor places and seen the poverty you speak of and I can assure you of one thing, as long as there are residents of these places, there will be inequities and corruption. And you know what? If you give aid and opportunities to people, the clever ones will convert those benefits to education and convert that education into all sorts of benefits. Some for good and some for less than good. Never forget the definition of foreign aid: Poor people from rich countries giving money to rich people from poor countries. Sadly cynical but true - I've seen it and been amongst it. Little foreign-educated rich kids in European cars driving out to the sweatshops in the slums to make sure everyone keeps their noses to his or her grindstones.

What does this have to do with the Airbus? Apparently you are better at dentistry than economics. For any person, place or organization to prosper, somebody somewhere has to buy and sell their products. Whether it's poor cow-herders tending cattle destined for the tannery to be made into hides for aircraft seating, cotton growers making...I'm sure you get it.

I take the gist of your comments but I can assure you that if you somehow stood at the airport and screamed to travelers, "this isn't right, this isn't moral, Airbus and Boeing are only in this for the money" you'd be looked at very strangely.

One final question. How did you get to wherever you've been? Bicycle?

Nice to see Arabs enjoying the money they are extorting from Western Democracies- rather than being awed by this, we should be disgusted by the wasteful extravagance of these Arab shiekhs

love emirates.. wish i could afford to fly first class on this!! i've paid for my fair share of oil; at least it is possible for me to experiance some of the fruits of that.. no-one goes into business to lose money..why should the arabs be any different??
bloody hippies, get out and live life, ok? crying about every little thing won't stop the world turning. at least you us realists something to laugh at (ozredman, i'm with you)....thanks!

A fascinating thread with many angry people telling us they have the answers. Sadly this explains why the human race is doomed - never being able to agree about anything, however trivial, and the never ending population increase will eventually seal our fate, if we don't kill each other first. I prefer the swifter cleanser, E.L.E. - would do this beautiful planet a huge favour and rid it of the single most destructive virus ever known - mankind.

The future of airplanes are in your hand =D

anonymous, you're a funny guy. why do i think low iq racists are funny?? cos the things you say just prove you are indeed a low iq racist, and your iq isn't hi enough for you to realize! hilarious!
keep up the good work!! ;)

You're ALL wrong! This is very controversial, but not. It wastes gas, but saves gas too. It is better than spending money on war, however war is a more worthy cause.

I wonder how many starving children you could feed with this waste of cash... never mind the ticket costs...

imagine how many children are kept from starving with massive projects like these. imagine how many jobs are created, and how many workers are able to provide for their families...

quit being so ignorant people.

you are a massive idiot. what about the jobs created? then those workers pay their bils; more jobs, and so on. and he buys things..more jobs, and so on. maybe the workers give their kids an education; more jobs, and chances for better jobs for the next generation. and so on.
god you hippies make me sick. you have NO IDEA about how the world works, but anyone who disagrees with "opinions" is wrong.
do you all think that people go into business to lose money? should every successful person be responsible for all thats wrong in the world??
for fucks sake grow up, get out of university(or worse, your parents house), and see a bit and live a bit.

Ozredman said...

Oh boo hoo. Can you imagine how many starving people you could feed if you diverted war budgets to aid budgets. How many people you could feed by not wasting money on farm subsidies. By not bailing out criminally negligent insurance companies and finance houses.

Let's make it law that Airbus doesn't spend money making planes but instead, gets everything they can from their customers and gives it to starving children. And let's get a UN resolution forbidding private corporations from buying new aircraft. They have to give it to starving countries and just keep maintaining their old fleet.

Hey, why stop there? There's all sorts of waste soaking up money that could be spent somewhere else.
Have a think about the benefits of planes like this. Without R&D from organizations like Boeing, Airbus, NASA, etc. we'd all be falling out of the sky in oversized Sopwith Camels.

You're the same people that bitch and moan about wasted fuel in Formula 1, etc. Never stopping to think about the massive, beneficial spin-offs from these endeavors.

Go back to school, study basic economics or social science or 'anything' that will encourage some clear, informed thinking.
Who knows - you might get a career that gets you a ticket on one of these planes. That'd wipe the sanctimonious frown off your face.
